What Is the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)?
The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a government-funded dental program that helps eligible Canadians receive essential dental services at reduced or no cost. Designed for people without private dental insurance, the plan aims to remove financial barriers and make dental care more accessible across the country. Services like cleanings, fillings, extractions, X-rays, dentures, and preventive care are included in the plan.
Once limited to certain age groups, the CDCP now welcomes individuals of all ages who don’t have private dental insurance and meet the income requirements. This move helps close a major gap in healthcare access, making oral health a right—not a luxury.

Starting in May 2025, all eligible Canadians aged 18 to 64 can apply through the online CDCP portal at canada.ca/denta or or by visiting a Service Canada Centre.

Dental Coverage for Seniors in Canada
A key part of the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is its strong support for seniors. Recognizing that many older adults face financial barriers to oral care, the federal government has prioritized comprehensive dental coverage for seniors across the country.
This plan offers access to preventive, restorative, and emergency dental services, helping seniors maintain not just a healthy smile but also their overall health and quality of life. Whether it’s regular cleanings, fillings, or urgent care, the CDCP aims to ensure no senior has to delay or skip treatment due to cost.
It's more than just dental coverage—it's peace of mind for aging Canadians.

What is the CDCP?
The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) is a government program that helps cover dental costs for eligible Canadians without private dental insurance. It supports access to essential oral health care services.
How do I know if I qualify for CDCP coverage?
You may qualify if you're a Canadian resident, filed your 2024 taxes, have no dental insurance, and your household income is under $90,000. All four conditions must be met. You can reach us for further guidance.
What documents do I need to apply?
You’ll need your Social Insurance Number (SIN), proof of identity, and confirmation that your 2024 taxes are filed. Sun Life will verify your eligibility directly.
What dental services are covered under the CDCP?
The CDCP includes coverage for exams, cleanings, x-rays, fillings, extractions, dentures, and some emergency procedures. Some treatments may need pre-approval.
Will my dentist accept CDCP coverage?
Not all dentists are enrolled in the program. Be sure to ask your dentist if they participate in the CDCP or check with Sun Life for a list of participating providers. We accept CDCP.
How can I schedule an appointment under the CDCP?
Once approved, you’ll get a welcome package from Sun Life. Then, you can book an appointment with a dental provider who accepts CDCP patients.
Are emergency dental services covered under the CDCP?
Yes, emergency dental care is included. Services like pain relief, infection treatment, and urgent procedures are covered, though some may need approval.
Can I keep my CDCP coverage if I get dental insurance later?
No. If you get access to private dental insurance (through work, a spouse, or pension), you must inform Sun Life, and your CDCP coverage will end.
